Aaron Hyman on querying the limits of archival material

We are thrilled to share that Aaron Hyman, a distinguished member of our faculty, has recently published research in the Colonial Latin American Review on the role archives play in the field of art history, particularly in uncovering the identities of colonial artists, scribes and writers.

“The colonial archive and its fictions” explores how archives, with their gaps and surpluses, shape historical research methods and scholarly interests concerning these historical figures.

Together with Barbara Mundy of Tulane, Prof. Hyman delves into the gaps in archives that have been or could be filled, examining various methods – from traditionally accepted means of recovery to clearly fictitious narratives – to explore innovative ways of probing the limits of archival material.
