The Department of the History of Art is delighted to welcome Dr. Caitlin Earley as the inaugural Austen Stokes Assistant Professor of the Art of the Ancient Americas.

Dr. Earley joins us from the University of Washington, where she served as Assistant Professor of Art History. Her research focuses on the visual culture of ancient Mesoamerica, with particular attention to Maya art and its intersections with politics, performance, and identity. Her interdisciplinary approach combines archaeological evidence, epigraphy, and art historical analysis to illuminate the complex narratives embedded in ancient American artworks. She is the author of The Comitan Valley: Sculpture and Identity on the Maya Frontier (2023). Dr. Earley’s current projects explore themes of violence and memory in Maya visual culture, and she is actively engaged in collaborative fieldwork in Central America.
