PhD Alumna Spotlights Italian Artist and Activist Nanni Balestrini in New Article

A jumble of black text appearing to emerge from an off-white and black newspaper.

The Department of the History of Art is delighted to celebrate PhD alumna Marica Antonucci on her recent publication, Nanni Balestrini, collage, and the aesthetics of operaismo, featured in the October issue of Word & Image: A Journal of Verbal/Visual Enquiry. Antonucci’s article explores the artistic contributions of Italian artist and activist Nanni Balestrini. Through a detailed analysis of his 1960s collages, she unveils the deep connections between his avant-garde techniques and operaismo—a Marxist movement centered on working-class struggles—offering fresh insights into proletarian identity and activism.
