Professor John White, Chair of the History of Art department at Johns Hopkins University from 1967–71, passed away on November 6, 2021. A specialist in Late Medieval and Early Modern Italy, his publications include the landmark The Birth and Rebirth of Pictorial Space (1957), Duccio: Tuscan Art and the Medieval Workshop (1979), Studies in Late Medieval Art (1983), Studies in Renaissance Art (1984), and Art and Architecture in Italy, 1250 to 1400 (first published in 1966 and subsequently included as part of the Yale History of Art series). He spent the majority of his career at University College London, serving as Chair there for many years after leaving Hopkins. He deeply shaped the intellectual questions and pursuits of many students and colleagues during his short time at Hopkins; the department marks and celebrates his distinguished career.
